The Leeds Lung Health Check has now closed to recruitment. Some participants in the study will continue to have scans to review lung nodules seen on previous scans until October 2026. They will be contacted directly about this.

Lung cancer screening has now been approved by the NHS in England, and an NHS-funded lung cancer screening service ( Lung health checks – NHS ) is expected to start in Leeds sometime in 2026. People will be invited by letter and phone-call once the service starts. Please note that this new screening service will be delivered by a different team from the Leeds Lung Health Check, so the Leeds Lung Health Check team will not be able to answer questions about future service.

How we will use data from people in Leeds

To help us improve lung health checks in the future we need to understand the long term benefits to people’s lung health. This will involve looking at what happens to people who come for lung health checks as well as those who do not; either because they chose not to or because they were not invited.

To do this we will look at GP and hospital medical records, and other sources such as national databases throughout people’s lifetimes. In particular we want to record how often people are diagnosed with chronic lung disease, and also lung cancer. No patient will be contacted directly by the research team for this information. This data will be held securely and will not be shared with other people. The researchers hope that this information will show the benefit of Lung Health Checks so they can be introduced more widely across Leeds.
